Finding restful sleep again
Lack of sleep can upset our body, it can especially play with our emotions, positive emotions being particularly affected. Making sleep a priority allows you to have a better quality of life and to protect your health in the long run.
To sleep well, we're often advised to foster positive, energetic emotions, like curiosity and enthusiasm — especially when we are under stress.
While it is vital to sleep, it is sometimes difficult to fall asleep. It's not just a matter of wanting to fall asleep! It only occurs if several conditions have been met. Some of these depend on the immediate environment: whether you are calm, cool, in the dark, etc. Others, on the other hand, are conditioned to what you went through previously, because the night sleep is prepared throughout the day. It is necessary to expose oneself to enough natural light and to have moved enough during the day, and to avoid screens and conflicts in the evening. We also find our emotional states there. We have known for a long time that negative emotions (anxiety, anger, sadness, stress, etc.) alter the quality and quantity of sleep. Even worse, these emotions often cause a vicious circle: the more they influence us during the day, the more our sleep is disturbed.
So how do you get back to restful sleep? To be restful, sleep must be deep enough. It is during the first 3 hours of the night that the body recovers the most from both physical and nervous fatigue.
Here are some tips to help you:
Establish a routine: Setting up daily (beauty, relaxation, meditation) and weekly (sports, swimming pool, massage) routines can allow you to find breathing space. When your pace picks up and your stress level rises, look for spaces dedicated to your own well-being. Creating spaces for yourself allows you to decompress and release unnecessary physical and mental tensions. When the body and mind are relaxed, sleep sets in more easily.
Exercise: Get rid of the tensions of the day by practicing physical activity. Sport activates the production of serotonin. This neurotransmitter is essential for mental well-being. Remember to put on your pair of sneakers for your half-hour of daily sport and you will find restful sleep more easily.
Turn off screens to find restful sleep: It is advised to decrease your "consumption" of screens in the evenings. Start by reducing the light intensity of screens (laptops, phones, tablets, etc.) 3 to 4 hours before bedtime. Then remove screen exposure gradually.
Meditate: make yourself comfortable, then close your eyes. Take a deep breath and relax. The important thing is to stay focused on your breathing. Doing this type of exercises even for a few minutes before going to bed will allow you to relax and therefore fall asleep more quickly.
Evacuate stress and anxiety: Difficulties falling asleep and waking up at night are often due to stress or anxiety. It is essential you put yourself in ideal conditions before going to bed: finding calm and tranquillity. Breathing exercises can be very helpful in calming down. Cardiac coherence consists of changing your respiratory rate by adopting the rhythm of 6 slow and deep breaths per minute. The goal is to slow the heartbeat to lower blood pressure and thus calm the brain.
