Sleep is an essential part of our lives and a key ingredient in good health and well-being. Ideally, we should spend one-third of each day sleeping to allow our bodies and minds to recharge in preparation for the day to come. But sleep can be elusive. We may toss and turn before falling asleep or wake up for hours in the middle of the night. We may only have problems sleeping when we are worried or upset abut something. Whether we experience occasional or frequent problems sleeping, flower essences are a safe and gentle way to help us get a good night’s sleep.

Sometimes we have difficulty sleeping when we replay the events of the day over and over in our minds, or we engage in continual internal argument or worry. This mental congestion can be cleared with essences such as White Chestnut (DEVA), Boronia (Australian Bush), or Sonderina (South African).

Nuits Paisibles (DEVA combination) is also good for calming repetitive thoughts. It is recommended for those who experience restless sleep, who cannot relax or who are awakened by nightmares and cannot go back to sleep.

We sleep better if we take time to relax before going to bed. Essences that help us to unwind at the end of the day include Valériane (DEVA) and Camomille (DEVA). They help us let go of our emotions. Rest & Relax (Wild Earth Animal combination) helps us to slow down, relax and rest both the body and the mind. Black-Eyed Susan (Australian Bush) and Calm and Clear (Australian Bush combination) are also useful for those who need to slow down and unwind before going to bed.

Morning Glory (South African) and Ipomée (DEVA) bring harmony and balance between waking and sleeping patterns, particularly for those who have trouble going to sleep or waking up. This is a good essence for students who are used to going to bed very late and getting up late, but need to re-adjust their sleeping habits.

Travel Essence (Australian Bush), Travel Ease (Alaskan Essences) and Travel Essence (South African) can help people adjust their sleeping patterns when moving between time zones.

Sweetpea (Green Hope Farm) is another essence for those who are unable to turn off the concerns of the day. It has a calming effect on the mental, emotional and spiritual bodies that leaves us more ready for sleep or able to experience more relaxing sleep. Lepidolite (Crystal Energy) has a soothing effect on the mind, relaxing mental tension and encouraging restful sleep.

It is often difficult to calm the fear and get back to sleep after a nightmare. Several essences are recommended, including Green Spider Orchid (Australian Bush) or Grey Spider Flower (Australian Bush), Kids' Stuff (Pacific combination), Orange Pincushion (South African), and Tomato (Spirit-in-Nature).

Lavender (South African) calms, soothes and balances the emotions of those who are overly excited or over-stimulated and have difficulties sleeping as a result. Indeed, over-stimulation can make it difficult to fall asleep. Sensitive people absorb the emotions and energy of other people and places. Cleaning the aura of this extraneous energy can help these people to sleep better. Essences like Purification (Alaskan Essences), Subtle Body Balancer (Fleurs de Vie), Pennyroyal (Green Hope Farm) can be used for this. Likewise, protecting the aura keeps you from taking on these energies in the first place. Auric protection essences include Guardian (Alaskan Essences), Auric Protection Essence (South African), and Golden Armor (Green Hope Farm).

Cleaning the energy in the bedroom is another way to help you get a good night’s sleep. Spraying the room with Space Clearing Mist (Australian Bush), Clear Sky (Fleurs de Vie) or Purification Spray (Alaskan Essences) removes any extraneous emotional or psychic energy. This makes it easier to fall asleep and to experience a better nights’ sleep, and can also help prevent nightmares. For that extra touch, the Calling All Angels Spray (Alaskan Essences) gives a soft, loving and serene energy to the room which is much appreciated by children and adults alike.
