Do you feel there's a sense of renewal in the air? The Year of the Horse arrives with its energy of openness and movement. It's the perfect time to peacefully turn the page on the year that is ending, and to move lightly forward toward the projects and encounters that this new year brings. I wish you all a gentle year, full of momentum and lovely surprises.

At the beginning of December, during one of my late-night scrolling sessions, I came across a reel about Mudita. Since then, I have not been able to get that term out from my mind. Mudita is one of the Four "Immeasurables" in Buddhist psychology. Metta is loving-kindness, Mudita is taking genuine, unselfish joy in the happiness and success of others, Karuna is compassion for those who are suffering and Upekkha is equanimity, or balance. Together, still according to Buddhist psychology, they form a complete recipe for emotional health and healthy relationships.

I find that the more I think about it, the more I see Mudita as an antidote to toxicity. In a world of shorts and social media reels, it’s easy to fall into comparison and envy ("Why them and not me?"). Mudita is the direct antidote to that poison. It actively converts jealousy into connection.

It doubles the Joy. When a friend succeeds and you feel Mudita, the joy doesn't divide, it multiplies. Their joy becomes yours, and your supportive reaction deepens their joy. It creates a positive feedback loop of goodwill.

Mudita is more of a practice, it’s not just a feeling. We are not always naturally joyful for others, and that’s okay. Mudita is cultivated like a muscle. You start small. When you see a stranger laughing with a friend, silently think, "I'm glad they are happy." Did a coworker get praised?

Practice thinking, "Their hard work paid off. Good for them."

Start with people you easily feel happy for (like a loved one), then gradually extend it to acquaintances, and even to people you find difficult.

Imagine someone's good fortune is like a beautiful sunrise. Envy is like closing your blinds, sitting in the dark, and feeling bitter that they get to see the sun. Indifference is just ignoring it and going about your day. Mudita is throwing your own windows wide open, letting their sunrise light up your own room, and basking in the same warm glow. Their light doesn't take away from you; it simply adds more light to the world, which you can share in.

Mudita turns life from a race where others' wins feel like your losses, into a collaborative dance where everyone's happiness enriches the whole room. It’s the realization that joy is not a scarce resource—it’s an infinite one that grows when shared. By practicing Mudita, you don’t just make the world better for others; you free yourself from the weight of comparison and fill your own life with more sources of celebration.

I really think the world needs a large dose of Mudita just about now, don’t you agree?

Your joy is my joy.
